A 26-Week Recovery Program for Men Affected by Domestic Violence and Coercive Control

You Know Something Happened. You May Still Be Trying to Understand What.

Maybe you spent months or years walking on eggshells, trying to keep the peace, questioning your own judgment, or wondering whether you were somehow the problem.

Maybe the relationship is over, but you're still trying to understand how you got there—or why its effects haven't simply disappeared.

Or maybe you're still in the relationship and aren't even sure whether words like abuse or coercive control apply to what you're experiencing.

You don't need to have that answer before beginning GROUNDWORK.

GROUNDWORK was created specifically for men who want to understand their experiences more clearly, rebuild trust in themselves, and make informed decisions about what comes next.

What GROUNDWORK Helps You Do

GROUNDWORK isn't about giving you another label or telling you how you should feel about what happened.

It's designed to help you do something more useful: understand your experiences, understand their effects, and decide how you want to move forward.

Over the course of 26 weeks, GROUNDWORK will help you:

Understand What Happened
Recognize patterns of coercive control, unhealthy relationship dynamics, and other experiences that may have been difficult to identify while you were living through them.

Understand What Happened to You
Explore how prolonged stress, relationship experiences, learned patterns, and your own history may have affected the way you think, feel, respond, and make decisions.

Rebuild Trust in Yourself
Strengthen your ability to recognize your own perceptions, boundaries, needs, values, and judgment without constantly second-guessing yourself.

Separate Responsibility from Blame
Learn to distinguish another person's choices and behavior from your own responsibility for the decisions, behaviors, and direction of your life.

Move Forward on Your Terms
Develop practical tools for recovery, healthier relationships, stronger decision-making, and a future that is increasingly shaped by your choices rather than by what happened to you.

How GROUNDWORK Works
A Welcome from Mike
Ready to Begin

Weeks 01–05: Phase One: Who You Were Built to Be.

GROUNDWORK begins before the relationship experiences that brought you here. Phase One explores the biological, developmental, relational, and social influences that helped shape who you became. The goal is not to explain your life with a single cause, but to begin understanding the many influences that contributed to the person you brought into your relationships.

Week 02: The First Window, Birth to Age 10
Week 03: The Second Window, Adolescence
Week 04: The Third Window, Early Adulthood
Week 05: Your Window Now

Weeks 06–08: The Map of Your Life.

Understanding where you came from is only the beginning. This brief transitional phase connects what you have learned about your development with the experiences and patterns that emerged later in your life. It provides a bridge between understanding how you were shaped and beginning to examine what happened in your relationships.

Week 06: Your Life as a Line
Week 07: Where the Ground Gave Way
Week 08: The Inventory and the Action Plan

Weeks 09–12: Phase Two: Coming Into Focus.

Patterns can be difficult to recognize when you are living inside them. This phase begins bringing those patterns into focus. You will examine experiences, behaviors, expectations, and relationship dynamics more closely while learning to distinguish what happened from the explanations you may have developed around it.

Week 09: Patterns That Are Not Accidents
Week 10: What Fear Does to a Male Body
Week 11: Self-Medication and Clarity
Week 12: The Man I Stopped Being

Weeks 13–16: Phase Three: Seeing Clearly.

Greater clarity makes it possible to examine difficult experiences without losing sight of yourself. This phase examines power, control, manipulation, boundaries, responsibility, and how prolonged relationship experiences can affect perception and decision-making. The objective is not to tell you what happened, but to give you better tools for evaluating it yourself.

Week 13: What This Actually Is
Week 14: The False Allegation Threat
Week 15: The Fog of Self-Doubt
Week 16: What Clarity Requires

Weeks 17–20: Phase Four: The Threshold.

Understanding creates a new challenge: deciding what to do with what you now know. This phase moves from recognition toward choice, examining safety, boundaries, decision-making, responsibility, and the practical realities that can accompany significant change. The emphasis shifts increasingly toward your agency and the direction you choose from here.

Week 17: What Leaving Looks Like
Week 18: A Plan That Is Mine
Week 19: The First Days
Week 20: Grief That Does Not Make Sense

Weeks 21–23: Phase Five: The Clearing.

When confusion begins to clear, recovery becomes about more than understanding the past. This phase focuses increasingly on rebuilding - strengthening self-trust, recognizing healthier patterns, developing practical skills, and deciding what you want to carry forward and what you are ready to leave behind.

Week 21: Level Ground
Week 22: What the Fog Actually Is
Week 23: The Man Who Was Waiting

Weeks 24–26: Phase Six: Building Forward.

The final phase of GROUNDWORK turns increasingly toward the life you are building. You will integrate what you have learned, strengthen the tools and principles you want to keep, prepare for challenges that may reappear, and define recovery on your own terms. The goal is not simply to have survived what happened. It is to move forward with greater clarity, agency, accountability, and purpose.

Week 24: What You Are Building
Week 25: Who You Are Now
Week 26: You Are an Overcomer

Bio section

Meet Mike

Michael “Mental Mike” Pozesny

I've spent much of my professional life working at the intersection of addiction, trauma, violence, criminal justice, mental health, and human behavior.

My career has included counseling, residential treatment, corrections and community supervision, higher education, professional training, and work with people affected by domestic and interpersonal violence. I hold four master's degrees and have completed extensive professional training across counseling, behavioral health, crisis intervention, substance abuse, and trauma-informed practice.

But GROUNDWORK wasn't created from credentials alone.

I'm also a survivor of early relational trauma and family dysfunction. My understanding of recovery comes from both sides of the desk - decades of professional work and knowing firsthand what it means to make sense of experiences that can shape how you see yourself and the world around you.

One conviction has followed me throughout my career:

People are often asked to change before they've been given a coherent way to understand what is happening within them.

That's why I created GROUNDWORK.

I'm not here to tell you your story or decide what happened to you. My job is to give you information, structure, questions, and practical tools that can help you understand your experiences more clearly - and then make your own decisions about what comes next.

— Mike

Is GROUNDWORK Right for You?

GROUNDWORK was created for adult men who have experienced - or believe they may have experienced - domestic violence, interpersonal abuse, coercive control, or other harmful relationship patterns.

You may still be in the relationship. You may be preparing to leave. You may have left recently, or the relationship may have ended years ago.

You may already know exactly what happened.

Or you may still be asking:

“Was this really abuse?”

You don't need to answer that question before you begin.

GROUNDWORK may be appropriate for you if you want to better understand your experiences, examine how they have affected you, rebuild confidence in your own judgment, and take greater ownership of the life you build from here.

GROUNDWORK is educational, not therapy.

It does not diagnose you or another person, determine whether your experiences meet a particular legal or clinical definition, provide individualized safety planning, or replace medical, mental health, legal, or crisis services when those services are needed.

What You Get With GROUNDWORK

GROUNDWORK is not a collection of disconnected videos or articles. It is a structured 26-week recovery program designed to take you through a deliberate progression - from understanding what shaped you and what happened, to rebuilding trust in yourself and deciding what you want to build next.

Your enrollment includes:

The Complete 26-Week GROUNDWORK Program
A structured progression through the full GROUNDWORK recovery process, organized into developmental phases that build on one another.

26 Weekly GROUNDWORK Workbooks
Each week includes a professionally designed workbook that guides you through the week's concepts, examples, reflection, and practical application.

26 Weekly Video Lessons with Mike
Each week includes a video introduction from Mike to help frame the material, identify what matters most, and prepare you for the work ahead.

The Marcus Story
Follow Marcus throughout GROUNDWORK as his story, music, relationships, setbacks, questions, and recovery provide another way to explore many of the concepts you will encounter.

Reflection and Application Exercises
GROUNDWORK asks you to do more than consume information. Structured exercises help you examine your own experiences, recognize patterns, and connect what you're learning to your life.

Weekly Knowledge Checks
Short knowledge checks reinforce key concepts and give you a chance to make sure you understand the material before moving forward.

A Program You Complete on Your Own Terms
GROUNDWORK is designed for independent learning. You can engage with the material privately and give difficult subjects the time and attention they require.

More Than Content

The value of GROUNDWORK isn't simply having 26 workbooks and 26 videos.

It's having a path.

Instead of piecing together hundreds of articles, videos, opinions, and social-media explanations, GROUNDWORK gives you one structured process for examining what happened, understanding its effects, and deciding what you want to do with what you now understand.

Begin GROUNDWORK

26 weeks. One structured path forward.

You don't have to understand everything that happened before you begin. You don't have to know exactly where the next 26 weeks will take you.

You only have to be willing to begin looking at your experiences differently.

Your enrollment gives you access to the complete GROUNDWORK program - including all 26 weekly workbooks, video lessons with Mike, reflection and application exercises, the continuing story of Marcus, and weekly knowledge checks.

GROUNDWORK is a psychoeducational program. It is not psychotherapy, medical or mental health treatment, crisis intervention, legal advice, or a substitute for individualized professional care.

Frequently asked questions

You've got questions. We've got answers.

Do I have to consider myself a victim of domestic violence to participate?

No. You don't need to adopt any particular label. Some men begin GROUNDWORK knowing they have experienced abuse or coercive control. Others begin because something about the relationship didn't feel right, and they want to understand it more clearly. GROUNDWORK gives you information and tools to examine your own experiences and draw your own conclusions.

What if I'm still in the relationship?

You can participate whether you are currently in the relationship, considering leaving, separated, divorced, or the relationship ended years ago. GROUNDWORK does not tell you whether to stay or leave. If you are currently experiencing threats, violence, stalking, or immediate safety concerns, however, an online educational program should not replace individualized safety planning or crisis assistance.

Is GROUNDWORK therapy or counseling?

No. GROUNDWORK is a psychoeducational recovery program. It provides structured education, reflection, and practical tools, but it does not provide psychotherapy, diagnosis, medical or mental health treatment, crisis intervention, or individualized clinical care.

Can I use GROUNDWORK while I'm seeing a counselor or therapist?

Yes. GROUNDWORK can be used alongside professional services. You may even find that the program raises concepts or questions that give you useful topics to discuss with your counselor or therapist. GROUNDWORK does not replace those services.

Do I have to complete one week every seven days?

No. The 26-week structure provides a progression through the material, but recovery doesn't operate according to a calendar. Some weeks may move quickly; others may deserve more time. The important thing is to engage with the material rather than race through it.

What if some of the material is difficult for me?

GROUNDWORK addresses emotionally challenging experiences. Work at a manageable pace, take breaks when needed, and seek appropriate professional or personal support when the material becomes difficult. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health crisis, use appropriate emergency or crisis resources rather than relying on GROUNDWORK.

Will I have to share my personal experiences with other people?

No. GROUNDWORK is designed so that you can work through the program independently. You are not required to publicly disclose your experiences or participate in group discussions in order to complete the program.

Is GROUNDWORK only about understanding what someone else did to me?

No. Understanding harmful relationship experiences is important, but GROUNDWORK also asks you to examine your own history, patterns, responses, choices, boundaries, values, and direction. Recovery involves understanding what happened and taking ownership of what you build next.

Ready to Begin?

You don't have to have everything figured out before you start. GROUNDWORK gives you 26 weeks of structured education, reflection, and practical tools to help you understand what happened, understand its effects, rebuild trust in yourself, and make more deliberate choices about what comes next.
